Nevertheless, somewhere down the line “special interest,” commonly shortened to SpIn (“spin”), became the term for the characteristically-autistic tendency to develop an obsession with something specific and often obscure. Autistic people don’t really love the term because the term “special” has become tied so closely with terms like “special needs,” which we resent. I don’t know who invented the phrase “special interest.” Probably some researcher. We hope we’ll receive connection in return, but if not, it’s less scary than pleading, “Connect with me, please!” Want to Improve Your Relationship? There are pleasant surprises, such as the hot cocoa/coffee/tea bar in the lobby, the wood fire, the tree-filled dining area draped in twinkling lights, the plush moose hiding in every room and available for a nominal fee to support a local children's charity, and a small gift shop. Were the staff helpful? Very helpful, friendly, competent. Was the breakfast buffet satisfactory? Very much so. Could they use defoamer in the whirlpool? Yep. Could a few dollars here and there spruce it up? Sure. Once I read the more recent reviews I was a bit concerned. We picked this a few days before a spontaneous trip to Vermont - I didn't want to stay anywhere with a numeral in its name, which my husband wanted, so we compromised with this. Not sure why there is such a spate of one-star reviews for 2022. And, with the exception of the Sunday morning staff, who were pleasant, the dining staff continued the surly and unhelpful theme of this place.… That might explain why the dining room was almost empty and there was only a single employee tending bar and waiting tables. The one dinner we had the night we arrived and were too tired to explore elsewhere was absolutely terrible. As to the food: the free breakfast was what you expect in a place of this level, neither better (as they advertise) nor worse. And there was only one bar of soap, which we had to shift back and forth from shower to sink. Nor are there shelves for toiletries - just one of those wire racks that fits over the shower nozzle, which kept slipping down and requiring us to bend over on the slippery floor to pick things up, praying we didn’t fall. The floor is plastic and extremely slippery, and there is nothing to hold on to. Service aside, the bathroom shower (there was no tub) is a serious accident waiting to happen. You expect more for north of $200 a night. And of course there was no dish soap to wash coffee cups and no replacement cups. Meanwhile damp towels were piling up under the sink - they were never even removed. We were made to feel as though we were intruding by even asking. Never an apology or even an acknowledgment that there was a problem. This time we just got a shrug, more dry towels and coffee pods. We asked to be put on the next day’s list. They said you have to ask to be put on the list for service and acted as though we should have known that, then handed us towels and coffee pods. When we returned at the end of our first day to find the room unserviced, we asked at the desk. We were never informed - not on the website, not when booking, not at checkin, and not on any card or info sheet in the room - that there would be no maid service. But the real issue was the lack of maid service. The front desk staff were almost all surly and unhelpful. Never have we encountered such poor service. We have traveled a lot, and frequently stay in places of the Comfort Inn/Hampton Inn type and price range like this one. It’s jarring having a rapper tell you his entire persona was really just a money-making shtick and then step right back into the character, to hear and see a hip-hop artist make a joke out of the fact that he sang on the stand in court. Either way, “Gooba” sounds old on arrival. The chorus - “Are you dumb, stupid, or dumb?” - rehashes a line from the Brooklyn rapper Ronny Godz’s “Are You Dumb” (that Remy Ma made into a catchphrase), which he cannibalized once before on Dummy Boy’s “Stoopid.” Chalk the repetition up to a lack of creativity, or blame Tekashi for banking his comeback single on an outdated saying on the fact that he just came home last month. “Gooba” is more of the same, a two-minute middle finger to haters set to a trap beat that sounds like horror-movie music. What followed was peak Tekashi, a long diatribe about how everyone’s jealous because he’s doing better than them, and everyone is mad at him because he changed the game. On IG, Tekashi danced into the picture to the tune of “Bad Boys” by the Kingston reggae group Inner Circle (best known as the theme to the reality show Cops), sporting gaudy chains and dangling handcuffs in front of the camera. He’s back like nothing happened, counting money, flashing jewelry, flaming people who doubted him, and drawing smoke from other rappers. We have the answer now, as 6ix9ine unveiled his comeback single “Gooba” and returned to Instagram Live to a record-breaking 1.9 million viewers. What do you say after that? How do you show your face in a community that rewarded you for what looked like realness, that despises people who lie for clout and people who cooperate with the cops? In court, he switched up and gave up associates like Kooda B, who was accused of trying to shoot Keef. A statement released by his attorney following the 2018 arrest on federal charges deflated the Tekashi myth in no uncertain terms, calling the rapper “an entertainer who portrays a ‘gangster image’ to promote his music,” who’d done nothing but get mixed up with the wrong crowd. Under the threat of jail time, the Brooklyn rapper, born Daniel Hernandez, said 6ix9ine was merely a character he plays. The 6ix9ine saga jumped through the looking glass last fall when he escaped federal racketeering and firearm charges by pleading guilty and appearing as the star witness for the prosecution during the trial against the Nine Trey Bloods - the set he shouted out throughout his meteoric rise to rap stardom, fueled by the thunderous 2017 hit “Gummo.” The case chipped away at the very idea of Tekashi 6ix9ine, who’d made a name for himself up until that point as the consummate hip-hop troll, a tough guy prone to barking out side-splitting threats in his music and carrying feuds with rivals like Chief Keef out into the streets off record. Photo: Courtesy of Tekashi 6ix9ine/YouTube It was Catherine Chamié who Curie placed in charge.’ In later years, Curie had less and less to do with the day-to-day running of the laboratories. The women were supportive of each other and often collaborated together. ‘However, by most accounts Curie was distant. ‘The women researchers worshipped Curie,’ the Rayner-Canhams say. Even so, the culture of the Radium Institute was unique. The women at the Radium Institute were supportive of each other and often collaborated togetherīy this time there were an increasing number of women in science, although much of their contribution remains unacknowledged and often went unrecorded at the time, according to Geoffrey and Marelene Rayner-Canham, authors on a chapter on Perey in the book Women in their Element. And yet, despite her misgivings, a few days later a letter arrived telling her she had been hired. The interview was a disaster, and Perey felt relief she would never have to set foot in the gloomy institute again. At first Perey assumed it was a secretary, but to her surprise she realised it was none other than the most famous woman in France: two-time Nobel prize winner Marie Skłodowska Curie. Her interviewer was dressed entirely in black, hair tied up in a bun, her pale face behind thick glasses. Soon after, she interviewed for a job as a personal assistant at the Radium Institute, a dark building near the Jardin du Luxembourg she found ‘melancholy and sombre’. Instead, in 1929 Perey took a diploma in chemistry at the Technical School of Women’s Education in Paris, which qualified her to work as a laboratory technician. She had dreamed of becoming a doctor, but when her father died the family was impoverished, their only income from her mother giving piano lessons. Perey was born just outside Paris, France in 1909. Inadvertently, she had recreated one of the most impressive scientific feats of the 20th century: Marguerite Perey’s discovery of the last non-synthetic element, francium. Walking across her lab at the University of California, Berkeley, US, Shield checked the team’s giant tome of known spectra and realised she’d been beaten to her find by 80 years. I was completely confused, and so I started thinking about actinium’s decay chains.’ ‘It looked like I had thorium, but the major peak wasn’t there. ‘I was looking at spectra of one of my column separations and was like “What is this peak? This peak shouldn’t be here!”’ The strange peaks were almost – but not quite – in line with thorium, the element into which actinium decays around 98% of the time. While experimenting with actinium-227, she had come across unusual results while performing gamma spectroscopy. In September 2019, Katherine Shield thought she’d made the breakthrough of her career – a new, never-seen phenomenon. From mtr, it turns out that I'm being served out of Germany ("alicloud-ic338528-ffm-b1.ip." Telia uses ffm to denote Frankfurt). Pinging, I get ~100ms latency from US East Coast. How much traffic to/from China is there in practice (given the Great Firewall, so it's largely unidirectional)? While that's not nothing, 30M people don't require the same scale of deployment as serving India, or the US / Canada / Mexico. Population of Australia + NZ is about 30M people. > China needs more connectivity, especially with the US for e-commerce (AliExpress is very slow). IIRC, data transiting outside of AU is relatively expensive. > Australia needs more global connectivity. For land maps I've never seen anything remotely close to being complete (no fault of the map makers, most of the data just isn't accessible). I'm pretty sure Iceland has an additional submarine path or two not accounted for here. On connectivity remember, much like South America being farther to the right, if you look on an actual globe instead of a flat projection the fastest path from China to the US is to go up to Japan not directly across the Pacific so adding connectivity there would not help.Īs with most maps this map is missing many current and upcoming cables. 1 high capacity cable may be easily worth 100 of another on this map. On bandwidth remember these lines represent cables, not the amount of bandwidth on the cable. That being said going over to Florida is the shorter path for most of the central/southern US as Central/South America is farther East than most imagine.ĪliExpress being slow is more likely a function of latency due to distance than connectivity or bandwidth. Remember this is a "submarine cable map", there are land fiber paths as well e.g. I hope nobody else has ever had to repeat such a measurement! So his instinct, that it does not matter, was incredibly correct. I believe the result was that you would see a 1% increase in the water concentration in the fiber over a period of 10,000 years. Then simple rate relations imply the rate of diffusion at sea floor conditions. How would you measure such a thing? There's no good way to increase the rate of diffusion of water into glass, but what you can do is make fiber with excess water in the core, and heat the fiber while measuring the diffusion of water out of the core into the outer portions of the fiber. (Water is an important impurity to try and control) He once was asked to calculate the rate of seawater diffusion into glass, which he and the team found ridiculous, but I suppose it was unknown if water could soak into glass in an appreciable way over long periods of time. Imagine if trans-continental communication relied on satellites? The global internet we have today would be much more isolated, with fiefdoms based on proximity.įor those interested in a fiber science story: I remember one day he brought home a $100,000 microscope that had been thrown away, which I proceeded to use to look at banal things like leaves and insects, but was designed to look at the ends of cut fibers.Īnyway, its incredible to me how much these cables have transformed the world, and how invisible it is to all of us. Our house growing up was full of cable segments, superconductors, lasers, and microscopes. My father was one of the inventors of the undersea fiber optic cable, and joined many of the cable laying missions, including the original Australia mission and several japan missions.
