There are pleasant surprises, such as the hot cocoa/coffee/tea bar in the lobby, the wood fire, the tree-filled dining area draped in twinkling lights, the plush moose hiding in every room and available for a nominal fee to support a local children's charity, and a small gift shop. Were the staff helpful? Very helpful, friendly, competent. Was the breakfast buffet satisfactory? Very much so. Could they use defoamer in the whirlpool? Yep. Could a few dollars here and there spruce it up? Sure. Once I read the more recent reviews I was a bit concerned. We picked this a few days before a spontaneous trip to Vermont - I didn't want to stay anywhere with a numeral in its name, which my husband wanted, so we compromised with this. Not sure why there is such a spate of one-star reviews for 2022. And, with the exception of the Sunday morning staff, who were pleasant, the dining staff continued the surly and unhelpful theme of this place.… That might explain why the dining room was almost empty and there was only a single employee tending bar and waiting tables. The one dinner we had the night we arrived and were too tired to explore elsewhere was absolutely terrible. As to the food: the free breakfast was what you expect in a place of this level, neither better (as they advertise) nor worse. And there was only one bar of soap, which we had to shift back and forth from shower to sink. Nor are there shelves for toiletries - just one of those wire racks that fits over the shower nozzle, which kept slipping down and requiring us to bend over on the slippery floor to pick things up, praying we didn’t fall. The floor is plastic and extremely slippery, and there is nothing to hold on to. Service aside, the bathroom shower (there was no tub) is a serious accident waiting to happen. You expect more for north of $200 a night. And of course there was no dish soap to wash coffee cups and no replacement cups. Meanwhile damp towels were piling up under the sink - they were never even removed. We were made to feel as though we were intruding by even asking. Never an apology or even an acknowledgment that there was a problem. This time we just got a shrug, more dry towels and coffee pods. We asked to be put on the next day’s list. They said you have to ask to be put on the list for service and acted as though we should have known that, then handed us towels and coffee pods. When we returned at the end of our first day to find the room unserviced, we asked at the desk. We were never informed - not on the website, not when booking, not at checkin, and not on any card or info sheet in the room - that there would be no maid service. But the real issue was the lack of maid service. The front desk staff were almost all surly and unhelpful. Never have we encountered such poor service. We have traveled a lot, and frequently stay in places of the Comfort Inn/Hampton Inn type and price range like this one.
